Common names: Hirao Clivia, Green Clivia
Family: Amaryllidaceae

Clivia “Hirao” is a striking evergreen perennial known for its lush, strap-shaped leaves and unusual green-hued flowers. This cultivar, developed in Japan by Mr. Hirao, is prized among collectors for its unique flower coloration and elegant growth habit.

Origin and Habitat

Clivias are native to the woodland regions of South Africa, where they grow under the canopy of trees in dappled light. The “Hirao” cultivar was bred from Clivia miniata and thrives in similar environments — shaded, well-drained areas with moderate humidity and protection from direct sunlight.

Plant Description

Clivia “Hirao” forms dense clumps of broad, dark-green, arching leaves arranged in a fan shape. In late winter to early spring, it produces clusters of trumpet-shaped flowers that open in shades of soft green to greenish-yellow, a distinct trait that sets it apart from the typical orange Clivias. The blooms are held above the foliage on sturdy stalks, creating a bold yet refined display.

Care Instructions

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade. Avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering
Water moderately during the growing season, keeping the soil lightly moist but not soggy. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is resting.

Soil
Plant in a well-draining mix rich in organic matter — a blend of potting soil, bark, and perlite works well.

Temperature
Ideal range is 15°C–26°C. Protect from frost and cold drafts; Clivia “Hirao” prefers a stable, mild indoor climate.

Additional Information

Clivia “Hirao” is slow-growing but long-lived, rewarding patience with stunning, long-lasting blooms. It is non-invasive, easy to maintain, and makes an excellent indoor or shaded patio plant. Propagation is typically by offsets, and mature plants may take several years to flower. Its rare green blossoms make it a prized specimen in any Clivia collection.
