Kalanchoe sexangularis is a robust succulent native to South Africa, particularly found in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal regions. It is appreciated for its striking foliage and vibrant flowers.

Origin and Habitat

This species naturally grows in rocky, well-drained soils within grasslands and open woodlands. It thrives in subtropical climates with warm temperatures and seasonal rainfall, often on slopes and rocky outcrops.

Plant Description

Kalanchoe sexangularis forms a dense, upright shrub with thick, triangular, and fleshy leaves that have distinctive angled edges, giving the plant its common name. The leaves are deep green with purple to reddish margins. In late winter to early spring, it produces clusters of tubular, bright orange to red flowers that attract pollinators such as birds and insects.

Care Instructions

Light
Prefers bright light to full sun. It tolerates some shade but flowers best in sunnier conditions.

Watering
Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.

Soil
Use a well-draining succulent or cactus soil mix.

Temperature
Thrives between 15°C and 27°C. Protect from frost, as it is not frost-tolerant.

Additional Information

Kalanchoe sexangularis is easily propagated from stem cuttings. Its vibrant flowers and unique leaf shape make it a popular choice for succulent gardens and container planting. It is drought-tolerant once established and adapts well to warm, dry climates.
