Common names: Haworthiopsis limifolia
Family: Asphodelaceae
Haworthiopsis limifolia is a robust, slow-growing succulent native to South Africa and Mozambique, valued for its textured, ridged leaves and attractive rosette form.
Origin and Habitat
This species is found in rocky, well-drained habitats across KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and parts of Mozambique. It grows in semi-arid environments, often under partial shade from shrubs.
Plant Description
Haworthiopsis limifolia forms dense rosettes of thick, dark green leaves covered with prominent longitudinal ridges or “limbs,” giving the leaf surfaces a rough, corrugated texture. The leaves taper to pointed tips. It produces slender flower stalks with small, tubular, pale pink or white flowers during the growing season.
Care Instructions
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to partial shade. Avoid harsh midday sun to prevent leaf burn.
Watering
Water moderately during active growth, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
Soil
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix.
Temperature
Thrives between 15°C and 27°C. Protect from frost.
Additional Information
Propagation is typically by offsets. Haworthiopsis limifolia is a popular choice for succulent collections, container gardens, and rockeries due to its distinctive textured foliage and hardy nature. It is drought-tolerant and prefers good airflow with moderate humidity.
