Haworthiopsis coarctata 'Red' is a striking succulent cultivar known for its dense, columnar growth and reddish tint on its tough, spiny leaves. It is a variety of Haworthiopsis coarctata, native to South Africa, and is appreciated for its architectural form and colorful foliage, especially when grown in bright light.

Origin and Habitat

The species Haworthiopsis coarctata is native to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, typically found in rocky, well-drained slopes and scrubland. It thrives in environments with bright light but often receives some protection from the hottest sun by nearby shrubs or rocks. The ‘Red’ form develops its reddish coloration primarily in response to sun exposure or drought stress.

Plant Description

This succulent forms dense, upright clusters of short stems covered in tightly packed, overlapping, fleshy leaves. The leaves are dark green but often develop a deep reddish or bronze hue on the raised tubercles and leaf edges when exposed to strong light or dry conditions.

Leaves are thick and triangular with small white spiny tubercles arranged in rows along their surfaces, giving a rough texture. The plant grows slowly, usually reaching 10–15 cm in height and often producing offsets that form dense clumps.

Flowering typically occurs in spring or summer, producing small, tubular, white to pale green flowers on slender stalks.

Care Instructions

Light
Prefers bright light to full sun to encourage its red coloration and compact growth. When grown indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window. Outdoors, provide full sun with some afternoon shade in very hot climates.

Watering
Water thoroughly but only when the soil is dry. During the active growing season (spring to autumn), water moderately and reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy to prevent root rot.

Soil
Needs well-draining soil. A suitable mix consists of:

  • 2 parts succulent or cactus potting mix

  • 1 part coarse sand or perlite

  • 1 part pumice or grit

Temperature
Thrives between 18°C and 27°C but can tolerate short periods down to 5°C if kept dry. Avoid frost exposure.

Additional Information

It is well-suited to container growing, rock gardens, and succulent arrangements. The plant offsets readily, making propagation easy. It is generally pest-resistant but should be checked occasionally for mealybugs.
