Formerly: Haworthia attenuata
Family: Asphodelaceae
Haworthiopsis attenuata ‘Lime’ is a visually striking cultivar of Haworthiopsis attenuata, prized for its bright lime-green foliage. This vibrant color variation makes it a popular choice for succulent collections, adding a fresh, lively appearance compared to the typical darker green forms.
Origin and Habitat
The species Haworthiopsis attenuata is native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, growing naturally in rocky, shaded areas with well-drained soils. The ‘Lime’ form is a cultivated variety selected for its unique bright coloration and is mostly found in cultivation rather than the wild.
Plant Description
This succulent forms compact rosettes of thick, pointed leaves covered with white, raised tubercles arranged in bands. The leaves of the ‘Lime’ cultivar are a vivid lime-green color, which can become brighter or slightly yellowish under strong light. The leaf margins have small white teeth.
The plant grows slowly and produces thin flower stalks with small tubular white flowers, usually in late winter or early spring.
Care Instructions
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light to partial sun. The bright foliage color is enhanced with good lighting but avoid harsh midday sun which can cause leaf scorching.
Watering
Water deeply but only when the soil is completely dry. During active growth (spring and autumn), water every 2–3 weeks. Reduce watering in winter.
Soil
Needs well-draining soil, such as:
2 parts succulent or cactus potting mix
1 part pumice or coarse sand
1 part perlite or grit
Good drainage is essential to avoid root rot.
Temperature
Thrives between 18°C and 27°C, tolerating brief drops to 5°C if kept dry. Protect from frost.
Additional Information
‘Lime’ offsets occasionally, allowing propagation by division. The bright leaf color may fade if grown in too much shade. Pests are rare but watch for mealybugs.
