Family: Asphodelaceae
Haworthia viscosa 'Calitzdorp' is a distinctive cultivar of Haworthia viscosa, named after the Calitzdorp area in South Africa where it was originally collected or identified. This succulent is valued for its tightly packed, pointed leaves that grow in dense rosettes and often display a rough, textured surface.
Origin and Habitat
Haworthia viscosa is native to the Western Cape Province of South Africa, commonly found in rocky, arid environments with well-drained soils. The 'Calitzdorp' form is a particular population or selection from the Calitzdorp region, known for specific leaf morphology and coloration.
Plant Description
The plant forms dense, compact rosettes with slender, sharp-pointed leaves arranged in overlapping patterns. The leaves are typically dark green to brownish-green and have a rough or slightly sticky surface texture, which is characteristic of Haworthia viscosa. Leaf margins often have small, white, tooth-like projections, giving a textured appearance.
Flowering occurs in spring, producing thin spikes with small, tubular white flowers.
Care Instructions
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light or partial sun. It tolerates some direct morning or late afternoon sunlight but should be protected from intense midday sun to avoid leaf scorching.
Watering
Water thoroughly but only when the soil is dry. During active growth (spring and autumn), water every 2–3 weeks. Reduce watering during winter dormancy.
Soil
Requires well-draining soil, such as:
2 parts succulent or cactus mix
1 part pumice or coarse sand
1 part perlite or grit
Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
Temperature
Thrives between 18°C and 27°C, tolerates brief exposure down to 5°C if kept dry. Protect from frost.
Additional Information
Haworthia viscosa 'Calitzdorp' offsets slowly but can be propagated by division or leaf cuttings. The rough texture of the leaves and dense growth make it a unique addition to Haworthia collections.
Pests are uncommon but watch for mealybugs. Good airflow and avoiding overwatering promote plant health.
