Family: Asphodelaceae

Haworthia cymbiformis variegated is a rare and attractive cultivar of Haworthia cymbiformis, notable for its striking variegation. The variegated form features irregular patterns of creamy white, yellow, or pale green patches alongside the normal green leaf tissue, adding a unique ornamental appeal to this already elegant succulent.

Origin and Habitat

The species Haworthia cymbiformis is native to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where it grows on rocky slopes and shaded environments. The variegated form is primarily cultivated and selected for its decorative leaf patterns rather than being commonly found in the wild.

Plant Description

This succulent forms compact rosettes of smooth, fleshy, boat-shaped leaves with translucent “windows” on the upper surfaces. The variegation creates irregular splashes or streaks of lighter colors, which can vary greatly between individual plants. Leaves retain their characteristic curved, ovate shape but with eye-catching variegated patterns.

The plant grows slowly and remains compact, usually about 7–10 cm in diameter. Flowering is occasional and produces small white tubular flowers.

Care Instructions

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered shade. Variegated leaves are more sensitive to direct sunlight and can scorch if exposed to harsh midday sun, so partial shade is ideal.

Watering
Water thoroughly but only when the soil is fully dry. During the growing season, water about every 2–3 weeks. Reduce watering in winter.

Soil
Needs well-draining soil, such as:

  • 2 parts succulent or cactus potting mix

  • 1 part pumice or coarse sand

  • 1 part perlite or grit

Drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

Temperature
Thrives between 18°C and 27°C. Can tolerate brief drops to 5°C if kept dry. Protect from frost.

Additional Information

Variegated Haworthia cymbiformis grows more slowly than the green form due to reduced chlorophyll. It requires slightly more care regarding light and water balance to prevent leaf burn or fading of variegation.

Propagation is typically by offsets, as variegation is often unstable in leaf cuttings or seeds.
