Family: Asphodelaceae
Haworthia cymbiformis var. setulifera 'Senjo Kan' is a specialized and visually distinctive variety of Haworthia cymbiformis. This variety is prized for its delicate, fine white bristle-like setae (hair-like projections) along the leaf margins, giving the plant a unique textured appearance. The cultivar name 'Senjo Kan' refers to a selected form known for its compact rosette and refined leaf details.
Origin and Habitat
The species Haworthia cymbiformis is native to the Eastern Cape region of South Africa, typically growing on rocky slopes and shaded areas with well-draining soils. The variety setulifera naturally occurs as a variant with leaf margins fringed by fine bristles or setae. 'Senjo Kan' is a cultivated selection admired by collectors.
Plant Description
This succulent forms small, compact rosettes with fleshy, smooth, boat-shaped leaves. The key feature is the fine, white, hair-like bristles (setae) along the leaf margins, which are delicate and give the plant a soft, ornamental fringe. The leaves are usually light to medium green and maintain the typical translucent “window” areas on the upper surfaces.
The rosette generally reaches about 6–10 cm in diameter. Flowering produces slender stalks with small, white tubular flowers, usually in spring.
Care Instructions
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered shade. Direct strong sun can damage the delicate leaf edges and cause leaf burn, so some protection during midday is recommended.
Watering
Water thoroughly but only when the soil is dry. During active growth (spring and autumn), water every 2–3 weeks. Reduce watering in winter dormancy.
Soil
Requires well-draining soil, such as:
2 parts succulent or cactus mix
1 part pumice or coarse sand
1 part perlite or grit
Proper drainage prevents root rot.
Temperature
Thrives between 18°C and 27°C, tolerates brief drops to about 5°C if kept dry. Protect from frost.
Additional Information
Haworthia cymbiformis var. setulifera 'Senjo Kan' is slow-growing and typically propagated by offsets to maintain its unique leaf characteristics. The fine leaf hairs make the plant visually delicate but also more sensitive to physical damage or harsh conditions.
Pests are uncommon but watch for mealybugs and fungal issues from overwatering.
