Family: Asphodelaceae

Haworthia cooperii var. truncata is a popular variety of Haworthia cooperii, distinguished by its unique truncated leaf tips. This gives the leaves a flat or squared-off appearance at the ends rather than the usual rounded or pointed tips seen in the typical species. It is highly prized for its unusual, architectural form and translucent leaf windows.

Origin and Habitat

Native to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal regions of South Africa, this variety grows in shaded, rocky environments with well-draining soil. The natural habitat is characterized by filtered light and moderate moisture during the growing season.

Plant Description

This succulent forms small rosettes with fleshy, thick leaves that have flat, truncated tips. The leaves are fleshy, pale to medium green, often with translucent “windows” on the upper surface that help the plant capture light in shaded conditions. The leaf margins may be smooth or slightly toothed.

The plant grows slowly and typically reaches around 6–9 cm in diameter. It produces slender flower stalks with small, white tubular flowers in spring.

Care Instructions

Light
Prefers bright, indirect light or filtered shade. Avoid harsh direct sun to prevent leaf damage.

Watering
Water thoroughly but only when the soil is dry. During active growth, water every 2–3 weeks, reducing frequency in winter.

Soil
Requires well-draining soil, such as:

  • 2 parts succulent or cactus soil

  • 1 part pumice or coarse sand

  • 1 part perlite or grit

Good drainage is critical.

Temperature
Thrives between 18°C and 27°C and tolerates brief drops to 5°C if kept dry. Protect from frost.

Additional Information

Propagation is primarily by offsets, as the unique leaf shape can be challenging to maintain through leaf cuttings or seed. This variety is appreciated for its sculptural form and is a favorite in succulent collections.
