Common names: Devil’s Tongue Barrel, Fishhook Barrel
Family: Cactaceae
Ferocactus latispinus is a compact, globular cactus native to central and southern Mexico. It is prized for its dramatic, wide, and hooked spines, as well as its ability to produce vibrant flowers even at a relatively young age. This species is often grown as an ornamental cactus and is especially admired by collectors for its symmetry and distinctive armature.
Origin and Habitat
Ferocactus latispinus is found in several Mexican states, including Oaxaca, Puebla, and Hidalgo. It typically grows in semi-arid scrublands and rocky hillsides, often on limestone or volcanic soils. The natural environment features strong sunlight, low humidity, and well-drained soil with limited organic content.
Plant Description
This species begins as a flattened, spherical cactus and becomes more cylindrical as it matures. It usually reaches about 25 cm in height and 30 cm in diameter, although it can grow larger in the ground.
The ribs are sharply defined and often number between 13 and 23. Each areole produces a striking set of spines—typically four central spines and several radial spines. The most prominent is the broad, flat central spine, often curved or hooked and colored deep red to purple or even gray as it ages. This spine can be up to 4 cm long and gives the plant its “Devil’s Tongue” nickname.
Flowers appear in late autumn to early winter and are purple, pink, or sometimes yellow, depending on the form. The flowers are funnel-shaped and emerge from the plant’s apex.
Care Instructions
Light
Requires full sun to develop its compact shape and vivid spine coloration. Indoors, it should be placed in the sunniest available location, ideally a south-facing window.
Watering
Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring to early autumn), water every few weeks. In winter, water only sparingly or not at all, as the plant enters dormancy and excessive moisture can lead to root rot.
Soil
Demands excellent drainage. Use a coarse, low-organic cactus mix such as:
2 parts mineral grit (pumice, crushed lava rock, or perlite)
1 part coarse sand
1 part cactus potting soil
Avoid soils with high peat content, as they retain moisture and can cause rot.
Temperature
Ferocactus latispinus grows best in temperatures between 20°C and 30°C during the active season. It can tolerate short periods of cool weather but should be protected from prolonged exposure below 5°C.
Additional Information
This cactus is slow-growing and typically solitary, although older specimens may occasionally produce offsets. It flowers reliably with age and good care, making it one of the few barrel cacti that will bloom in a pot at a manageable size.
Propagation is usually by seed, as it rarely offsets. Pests are uncommon but may include mealybugs or spider mites, particularly in dry indoor environments. Regular inspection and good airflow around the plant can help prevent infestations.
