Common names: Tiger Jaws, Shark Jaws
Family: Aizoaceae
Faucaria is a genus of compact, clump-forming succulents native to South Africa, particularly the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces. These plants are well adapted to dry, rocky environments and are especially notable for their unique, toothed leaves.
Origin and Habitat
Faucaria species originate from arid regions of South Africa, where they grow in rocky outcrops and well-drained, sandy soils. They are commonly found in semi-shaded spots among rocks or low shrubs, which help shield them from intense midday sun. The climate in their native habitat is characterized by low rainfall and dry winters.
Plant Description
Faucaria plants are low-growing and form tight rosettes that gradually spread into small clumps. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and triangular in shape, usually arranged in opposite pairs. Their most distinctive feature is the soft, tooth-like projections along the leaf margins, which give the impression of an open animal jaw. The leaf surface is often green to grey-green and may develop reddish or purplish hues under sun stress or drought. Small, bright yellow, daisy-like flowers appear typically in late autumn or early winter. These flowers open in the afternoon and close at night.
Care Instructions
Light
Faucaria prefers bright light to full sun. Indoors, place it near a sunny window with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct light daily. Outdoors, it can be grown in full sun but may benefit from some afternoon shade in very hot climates.
Watering
Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. During the active growing season (spring to autumn), water deeply but infrequently. In winter, reduce watering significantly, as the plant enters a semi-dormant period and is highly susceptible to rot if kept wet.
Soil
Use a well-draining soil mix, such as a commercial cactus or succulent mix. Alternatively, combine:
2 parts coarse sand or perlite
2 parts cactus potting soil
1 part pumice or grit
Temperature
Ideal temperatures range from 18°C to 27°C. The plant can tolerate cooler temperatures down to about 4°C but should be protected from frost.
Additional Information
Faucaria is easy to propagate by dividing offsets or using leaf cuttings. It may enter dormancy in winter or during very hot summer conditions, during which watering should be minimal. While generally pest-resistant, it may occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites if grown indoors or in crowded collections. Due to its unique texture and jaw-like leaves, it is a popular choice for succulent collectors and is often grown in containers, rock gardens, and small-scale desert landscapes.
