Senecio mandraliscae is a striking succulent native to South Africa, particularly the Western Cape region. It is admired for its slender, finger-like leaves with a distinctive blue-grey color.

Origin and Habitat

This species naturally grows in rocky outcrops and well-drained soils within semi-arid areas. It thrives in Mediterranean climates characterized by wet winters and dry summers.

Plant Description

Senecio mandraliscae forms dense clumps of erect, cylindrical leaves that are smooth and covered with a powdery blue-grey bloom. The leaves grow upright, resembling fingers reaching upwards. In late winter to spring, it produces small, yellow, daisy-like flowers on slender stems, although the flowers are often less conspicuous compared to the foliage.

Care Instructions

Light
Prefers full sun to partial shade. Bright light enhances its blue coloration.

Watering
Water sparingly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.

Soil
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix.

Temperature
Ideal temperature range is 15°C to 27°C. Protect from frost.

Additional Information

Senecio mandraliscae is easy to propagate from stem cuttings. Its unique blue foliage and upright growth habit make it a popular choice for succulent gardens, rockeries, and container plantings. The plant is drought-tolerant and suited to warm, dry environments.
