Family: Asparagaceae

Origin and Habitat

Agave americana ‘Mediopicta Alba’ is a variegated cultivar of Agave americana, native to Mexico, particularly the arid and semi-arid regions of central and northern Mexico. The species grows in rocky, well-drained soils on slopes, plains, or desert scrublands, thriving in full sun. The ‘Mediopicta Alba’ cultivar, selected for its striking variegation, is cultivated for ornamental use and is well-suited for xeriscapes, large containers, or as a dramatic landscape focal point.

Plant Description

Agave americana ‘Mediopicta Alba’ forms a bold, symmetrical rosette, typically 90–150 cm wide and 60–120 cm tall, smaller than the wild species due to its variegation. Its thick, fleshy leaves are lance-shaped, rigid, and slightly curved, featuring a creamy white to pale yellow central stripe flanked by blue-green to grey-green margins. The leaves, up to 90 cm long, have sharp, dark brown marginal teeth and a prominent terminal spine. The white variegation creates a striking contrast, especially in bright light. At maturity (10–20 years), it produces a towering 3–6 m flower stalk with yellow-green flowers, attracting pollinators like bees and bats, after which the main rosette dies, leaving offsets. Its architectural form and vivid coloration make it a standout in succulent collections.

Care Instructions

Light

‘Mediopicta Alba’ thrives in full sun to partial shade. Indoors, place near a south-facing window with at least 6 hours of bright light. Outdoors, it prefers full sun but may benefit from light afternoon shade in extremely hot climates to prevent leaf burn. Insufficient light dulls the variegation and weakens growth.

Watering

Water sparingly using the “soak and dry” method, ensuring the soil dries out completely between waterings. In spring and summer, water every 10–14 days, depending on climate. In winter, reduce to once every 3–4 weeks, as the plant is semi-dormant. Overwatering, especially in cold or wet conditions, can cause root rot.

Soil

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent potting mix with 50–70% mineral content like perlite, coarse sand, or pumice.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures range from 18°C to 29°C. It is hardy in USDA zones 8a–11, tolerating brief drops to -7°C, but requires protection from prolonged frost or wet, cold conditions. In colder climates, grow indoors or use frost cloth for outdoor plants.

Additional Information

‘Mediopicta Alba’ is prized for its dramatic white variegation and robust form, making it ideal for large containers, rock gardens, or as a statement plant in arid landscapes. It propagates primarily through offsets (“pups”), which can be separated after drying for 1–2 days and replanted in well-draining soil. Seed propagation is possible but slow, and seedlings may not retain the variegation. The plant is toxic to pets and humans if ingested, and its sharp spines and teeth require careful handling. It’s susceptible to agave snout weevil and scale insects; monitor for black spots or wilting and treat with insecticidal soap if needed. Its low-maintenance nature and stunning contrast make it a favorite for adding bold, architectural beauty to gardens or collections.
